Christmas must have come early! Okay, so my nook arrived. I've managed to get it charged and registered it so that my books would show up. I still haven't read anything on it due to sickness. I'm hoping to feel well enough to sit up this evening. It's fairly easy to set up and I anticipate the reading experience to be even more simple. Now I need to request gift card money from my family for Christmas, so I can buy some more books.

Sorry you're not feeling well. Hope you're on the mend.

Thanks, gals! Yep, I wound up with a kidney infection. I hate those things. Thankfully, the antibiotics have kicked in. And, I'm really hoping I'll get some gift card money now. There are a handful of books I'd really like to get.

Btw - I've started reading one of the books already loaded and I like the feel of the thing. It's got a little heft, but it feels super sturdy and I really like the matte finish of the screen. I need to try a book light for bedtime reading, as there is no backlight. I think I'll dig around and look for a book light that I am sure is hanging around the house someplace...

Suetu has a booklight for hers. I don't think it's anything made specially for the Kindle (which is what she has, not a Nook).

Actually, mine sort of is made for the Kindle. Well, it's designed to be specifically integrated into the Kindle cover I purchased. The cover and light are both by M-Edge, and they probably have similar products to fit the Nook--or soon will. Let me know if you need any further info on their products, Stewies Mom. I've been especially delighted with the cover I chose.

And congrats on your gift! I've said it before, but I do love my Kindle so much. I know Amazon and the Kindle are pure evil, but I can't help it. I read an interesting article about the mixed reviews the Nook is getting here:

That said, all that matters is that you're happy with it. I've read plenty of criticism of the Kindle, but the device meets my needs almost perfectly. I really look forward to hearing your thoughts on the Nook after you've had some time to get a feel for it.

Mrs. Sarge has a Kindle and loves it dearly. Last summer we were on vacation and she forgot her charging cable. I was made to drive all over Lexington KY trying to find one in stock so she could finish reading her books on the way home. I finally made use of the little sucker myself a few weeks back, and it's not bad. I have a lot of qualms about it due to the way the books are copy-protected and licensed, but the hardware works great.

Oh, and she has the kindle-specific clip-on light as well. It also works great.

All of that said, none of the book readers are quite a clear as my laptop. Yes, the battery life is a helluva lot better, and it's much cheaper, but I already *own* the laptop and have portable and car chargers for it. Since I pretty much take the laptop everywhere with me, there's little incentive to get yet another device that's got to be schlepped around. Oh, and I just got a new cellphone - the Motorola Droid. I suspect there will be a book reader for that in the very near future as well.

So I'm still holding off on a book reader. The nook looks interesting, as does the Sony PRS-300 (see here for an excellent, detailed review by Charlie Stross). In addition, there's a consortium of publishers coming out with their own device, and Apple will probably introduce some sort of tablet in the upcoming year. My laptop is due for replacement the middle of next year, so I probably won't make any purchase until then.

Our store finally received the Demo version.Note to anyone exploring the Demo version-it actually runs slower than the one you would own. One of my coworkers has already received his Nook and confirms this.

Ive spent some time exploring the Nook. And I must say I am actually intrigued into owning one. The line work is tight with no level of fuzzyness or pixalization. The screen was glare free.

As a book lover/collector I was skeptical of any E reader device. I'm just so use to and comforted by holding a hardcover in my hands when reading that I thought I would never be interested in such a device. But after having given it chance I might just have to get one.
I figure I could download my favorites and or any book i'm interested in reading and if I enjoy the book , turn around and buy the Hardcover for my library.

Doubtful I would have much use for the newspaper function and there are so few magazines that I actually read, so those options are of little interest. But being able to play mp3's would be great for loading all my favorite audio books. Ahhhh to have the complete Hitchikers Guide radio programs all in one place without having to switch CDs

Actually, Suetu, I waffled back and forth over the Kindle versus the Nook. I drooled over the computer screen every time I visited Amazon. I don't feel that Amazon, nor the Kindle, are evil, I just already had many books from Fictionwise (my favorite eBook site) and since B&N bought them, and therefore, adopted the ePub file format, I knew that waiting for the Nook was the choice for me. I'm going to head over to that article, and I'll post again, after I've read a few books on my new toy. And thanks! I have a feeling this will be a permanent fixture in any purse or handbag I carry from now on. Smile
