GOLD CROSS

He was his mother's pride and joy,
Was born his parents' only son.
He was an intelligent boy,
Brought happiness to everyone.
Not a selfish bone in his body,
He opened up his heart to all,
And made the world a better place;
He went way beyond his call.
No matter how busy he'd become,
He'd stop to call his folks now and then.
There was little he couldn't overcome,
But he won't be coming home again.

Through madness, mud, and blood,
He always did the best he could.
This soldier sacrificed everything;
He fought just like they knew he would.
He garnered the medal for valor;
They placed it beside his grave.
He received his gold cross for defending
The land of the free and brave.
He lived and died courageously;
He was stronger than a hundred men.
He'll be a hero till the end of time,
But he won't be coming home again.

MAN ALIVE

Lost in his imaginary world
Like Peter Pan, he amazes me
He reminds me of a simpler time
Before Sprint and Infiniti

He is class personified
With his wisdom and his grace
He has rhythm, he has style
He puts a smile on my face

He calms my tortured soul
When rage courses through my veins
He heals my broken heart
And cheers me up when it rains

He likes big beautiful girls
And sirens like Grace Kelly
Somehow he makes time stand still
When he sings on the telly

Maybe not the most popular
But he makes me happy
He's the sexiest man alive
At least he is to me

JAMES

This sombre dark cloud drifts in
Bringing thunder and lightning.
It's raining thoughts of you;
Why does it seem so frightening?
These memories still linger,
Some things never fade away.
Words that were left unsaid
And put off for another day.

Instead of writing this letter,
I should have known you better.

Creating art that becomes your life,
And your life becomes an art.
You were born to be different,
You'd almost known it from the start.
Locked inside your private world
With your unconventional theories.
Thinking of love so dangerous,
Running away from this disease.

Before you became God's debtor,
I should have known you better.

You hungered for fulfillment
And weren't content to live a lie.
You searched for guides and mentors,
People who'd haunt you till you die.
Playing with agnosticism,
You felt you'd no soul left to save.
Your life was cloaked in mystery,
You took your secrets to your grave.

You were never a trend setter,
But I should have known you better.

Countless men came along;
They wanted to hold your hand.
All those ignorant people--
They just didn't understand.
You remained true to yourself
Despite persecution and hate.
Happiness without shame and guilt,
It was your final resting state.

I need to burn this letter,
I should have known you better.

HISTORY

You don't love me, but that's all right
'Cause you were never cool
You always screw up everything
You dropped out of high school

So much time was wasted
So many words were said
You were so cruel to me
And I wished you were dead
I wish I could erase you
And cut you out of my mind
You never cared about me
You were always so unkind

You don't love me, but I won't cry
'Cause you're so insincere
You're only in love with yourself
You get worse every year

I gave you everything I had
But you did nothing for me
Cold, callous and calculating
The dark side of my history
You were like a monster
Who fed off my good heart
Tore it out of my chest
And ripped it all apart

You don't love me, but I'm all right
I'm due for an upgrade
When life offers you a lemon
Then you make lemonade

Your high opinion of yourself
Will one day be shattered
You ruined my entire life
Everything that mattered
All I can do is walk away
And put it all behind me
Get rid of all the memories
Whatever could remind me

You don't love me, but you're insane
You're always so high
You're stoned even when you're sober
I never know why

Can't remember what I saw in you
Whatever it was is gone
Our differences can't be reconciled
The battle lines have been drawn
If life is like a baseball game
You need to pick up the slack
You can't play with two catcher's mitts
You have to throw something back

You don't love me, but I'm all right
And I'll get over you
We're finished now, we're history
I think you know it too

WINDSTORM

The fierce windstorm exerts its wrath
Like a sort of hurricane
It throws birds into power lines
And destroys the water main

Trees are pulled up from the ground
Soccer fields are scorched and burned
Cars collide on the highway
Massive trucks are overturned

Windows are blown to pieces
By remnants of flying debris
Skyscrapers lie in ruins
They're victims of this tragedy

People search for answers
But there is no one to blame
Though it's an act of God
They will never be the same

No one could have predicted
The extent of the disaster
There should have been a warning
And they could've fled it faster

Shingles are twisted off the roofs
As the residents run for cover
They have to pick up the pieces
Wind is like a miserable lover

PURPLE MAJESTY

What else is there to say
When he's done everything
He calls himself a prince
But he's more like a king

This multi-instrumental one-man band
The one who inspired Reznor
He can fill an arena in seconds
And always leaves them wanting more

He takes charge like Napoleon
His influence is unmistakable
He ran circles around MJ
With his charisma so unshakable

Not afraid speak his mind
No stranger to controversy
People line up for hours
To see this purple majesty

"I can't disguise the pounding of my heart"

"I don't care where we go
I don't care what we do
I don't care pretty baby
Just take me with you"

"It's such a shame our friendship had to end.
Purple rain, purple rain..."

HEROES

We think our heroes are perfect
But they can be fragile too
Icons are not infallible
They make mistakes like we do

Sometimes there is a scandal
Or a fork in the road
Our heroes often leave us
They die or they implode

We hope they'll return to us
Stronger and better than ever
Often this never happens
They are lost to us forever

We are left with memories
Of the talents that they shared
They brought joy into our lives
And showed us how much they cared

They never really leave us
We grasp their enduring legacy
In the good times and the bad
Then give it to our posterity

FRIENDS

A friend is one who visits
When everyone else is gone
The person who gives us strength
And the light to look upon

A friend never judges
But tries to understand
Pull us out of crisis
And lends a helping hand

A friend lends us money
When we need it the most
Does not expect payback
Or feel the need to boast

A friend does not ignore us
When problems or deadlines are near
Nothing is more important
A friend's priorities are clear

A friend is never jealous
And doesn't try to upstage
There is no competition
They're always on the same page

A friend doesn't abandon us
In our very darkest days
Friends pick us up when we fall
They will support us always

SEPARATION

Summer is long over
I miss you everyday
Now I've gone back to school
And you're so far away

I wish you were here
There's nothing I can do
To bring you back home
So I can be with you

This distance separates us
A couple thousand miles
I still have all your letters
Arranged into neat piles

We'll be together again
I know it in my heart
Our feelings will grow stronger
All this time we're apart

Absence just makes us fonder
It's a constant exercise
This rift is temporary
Because true love never dies

THE WITCH'S CURSE

Tess was a haggard old woman
Over a hundred years old
Her wrinkled fingers were twisted
Her wicked heart was cold

She was well versed in spells
And she could concoct potions
Her pot was never empty
She put worms in her lotions

Her soups were mixtures of venom
And her scents contained blood
She wore a claw around her neck
It had survived The Flood

She was a vicious creature
One who frightened little children
People were repulsed by her
She scared off eligible men

One day she spied a blond youth
Traipsing through the Skeleton Wood
He struck her as rather odd
A boy who was up to no good

The lad's name was Alistair
And he spoke with a drawl
He'd never witnessed magic
The witch made his skin crawl

He wore a tartan kilt 'round his waist
But there was naught beneath
He carried a fiddle in his hands
And a bow between his teeth

He was a wild and carefree youth
With many lessons to learn
He hurled profanities at her
As she watched her cauldron burn

Alistair unwrapped his fiddle
He could play it fairly well
It reminded Tess of something
The music she heard in Hell

Tess cooked him a pot of stew
Made with goat, peppers and thyme
She stirred it as it bubbled
And tossed in slices of lime

She had never known such a lad
And she wanted him to stay
But she was an ugly old witch
Of course his answer was "Nay"

After he ate his goat stew
He gathered his fiddle and bow
She cast a love spell on him
And bound him before he could go

She tied him to an oak tree
And rubbed goose feathers on his head
She tormented him daily
Until he wished that he were dead

Tess left him on the seventh day
And went for a stroll in the wood
She picked berries and trapped rabbits
Plundered the forest neighborhood

Alistair called out from his tree
Before Tess returned from her walk
He hoped someone would rescue him
Maybe a huntsman or a hawk

A tall, red-haired man heard him
And he ran as fast as he could
The man called Billy Wenzel
He was a warden of the wood

Wenzel carried a large rifle
In a tight holster on his back
He cleared the forest of trouble
He was the leader of his pack

When Tess arrived on the scene
Wenzel shot her in the head
She had no time to argue
In two seconds she was dead

The warden untied the poor captive
He was an angel of good
Alistair found his bow and fiddle
And there was peace in the wood

THE CLONES

They emerge from their eggs
Like zombies from the ground
Then they stretch out their legs
Without making a sound

They all look the same
Identical twins multiplied
They don't have a name
They are evil personified

They walk in a straight line
Akin to children in a preschool
Their hair is straight and fine
And their expression is ultra-cool

They have no hope in their lives
Like those folks in Brave New World
The girls are like Stepford wives
Without their eyelashes curled

The men are so perfectly charming
As were their fathers before them
Sometimes they think thoughts so alarming
As they climb the stairs in tandem

The products of binary fission
They have no emotions or mirth
They are on a dangerous mission
To take over the planet Earth

QUIET REVOLUTION

He had many bright ideas
Circulating in his head
He wanted to change the world
But the world changed him instead

No one would agree with him
He couldn't win his case
There was no bending of minds
He was losing the race

Then he decided one day
That the change should start with him
He began to eat healthy
And he joined a local gym

The following week he thought
He would become a volunteer
He would try the hospital
And bring all the patients good cheer

He met a girl on the ward
She was a pretty nurse
She would become his someday
For better or for worse

Then he started a career
In a computer department
He left his old cubicle
And he found a new apartment

Later on he bought a house
It was a better solution
All those rewards resulted
From his quiet revolution
