Deals and contracts  Reply with quote

I get a daily e-mail called Publisher's Lunch, which is a round up of what's going on in the industry. Once a week, they send out a deal report, summarizing what books have been bought/rights sold in the last week. Their categories for how much an author receives looks like this:
"nice deal" $1 - $100,000
"good deal" $101,000 - $250,000
"significant deal" $251,000 - $500,000
"major deal" $501,000 and up

Some authors got together at the bar at Worldcon and decided that the first tier was a little broad. So they've broken out the "nice deal" category a little further, and it's funny as hell: http://www.scalzi.com/whatever/archives/001126.html.

The entry sparked a conversation about contracts and what they looked like, and someone put an old contract up for first time novelists to see. Lots of legal stuff, but if you've never seen a contract before, it's interesting to take a look at: http://msagara.livejournal.com/

The entries and comments are skewed toward sf/fantasy, because that's what these guys write, so these numbers aren't the same as non-fiction or mainstream fiction, and as always, your mileage may vary...

(And I haven't forgotten that I owe you kids Worldcon panel write-ups. They're coming.)

That's a pretty sweet break down of the deals. Personally, at this point, if I could get the shitty deal, I'd tell my employer to fuck off. But then, I thought about doing that a couple of weeks ago when I won $700 at the casino...
