Origin of Goudron (with a picture)  Reply with quote

I think I put the origin of my user name in a survey here somewhere already, but it bears repeating in light of new evidence.

I was going to play a new D&D campaign (in college - 1991) and I needed a name for a barbarian character. I was working at a corner store over the summer. I was perusing the ingredients of a cigarrette package, and found "goudron" (tar in French). I used the name a week or so later. He was a short lived barbarian. He drank some poison, maybe due to an oral fixation.

A week or so later, my comp sci friend introduced me to the "Internet" and we played a MUD over Telnet - Darker Realms lpMud based in Texas A&M at the time. It was more or less D&D in a multi player text based adventure. It was a game, but it was also a series of a bunch of chat rooms. Maybe 20-40 people on the server at once. Sometimes you played the game, and sometimes you chatted. I met Mrs. Goudron there. The character, Goudron, developed into a powerful mage, and I described him as being buck naked and burly (from his barbarian roots), except for his spell component bag. I continued to use the name online, and I started fanatically playing a halflife mod, TFC, in which I tended to play a sniper.

So, some people were offering to make some forum signatures, and I asked for a Goudron sig - I know you all picture me as the chubby white kitty in my avatar, but here is what "Goudron" might look like for real:

Pity Mrs. Goudron, if she has to polish it. Laughing
