Why Chipmonk Stores his Own Food  Reply with quote

Yeah, Another Coyote story I wrote (BEFORE I read Coyote Blue, I'd like to add) based on Native American myths. For a better explanation, go read "Coyote Iktome and the Goat" which is also mine, even though it says "guest" cuz I forgot to log in. Anyway, here's this:

Why Chipmonk Stores his Own Food
In the days when animals could speak, Coyote wasnít the only trickster. In fact, even he was out-smarted every now and again.
One fall, Coyote had planned ahead, and stored a large amount of dried fruit, meat and nuts for the winter. As the cold began to arrive, Coyote sat at home quite warm and happy with plenty of food. But soon he began to notice that his food, especially the nuts, were disappearing faster than he was eating them. He was sure that something, or someone, was stealing his food.
So Coyote stayed up late waiting to see who had been stealing his food. ìIf I ever catch that guy, Iíll eat him alive!î he said to himself.
So he tried not to sleep until it was very dark, and he found himself yawning. ìIíll just shut my eyes for a minuteÖî he said, and promptly fell asleep. When he woke up, he found that even more of his food was missing.
He tried again the next night, but again he fell asleep before catching the culprit, and again when he finally woke up, more food was gone.
The night after that, Coyote wised up. He slept all day, so when night arrived he wasnít a bit tired. He made a fire to keep himself busy, but got some ashes on his hands. Then he lay down and pretended to go to sleep. Pretty soon he heard scuffling around where his food was. He leapt up and grabbed the culprit. It was Chipmunk!
Chipmunk was fast, though and quickly wriggled free from Coyoteís grasp and ran away. But he still bore the marks from Coyoteís sooty hands.
ìIf I ever catch you, Iíll eat you to make up for the food you stole from me!î he yelled. But Chipmunk was too smart for that. From that day on, he always stored his own food for winter. And now, every time Coyote catches a chipmunk, that chipmunk doesnít last much longer.
