For realistic names you can always use a phone book or (if you're old enough to not give a shit about people you went to high school with) an old yearbook.

Oh, that's just too much trouble.

Use a name-generator on the web.

Names are difficult, usually I alter the name of someone I know or someone who made a name for themself. It works, it;s fun to alter and change. Usually i make it reflect their personality, their name becomes as interesting as they are.
But this changes too of course

I went to school with somebody named Steel Beam-
that's gotta be crazier than the name-generator's possibilities... Razz

Sounds like the name of one of the exclusive actors for Raging Stallion studios...

One of the main characters is strongly based on my ex-husband. I named him Jack as in he is such a jack-ass! And doesn't know jack-shit! And humps like a Jack rabbit! As infantile as a Jack-in-the-box! I often tell him to go jack-off. And he really jacked up his life.

Jack is a perfect name, yes.

"I caught my wife with my best friend."
"You bitter?"
"Yeah, bit him too."

I always quote that line when ever I feel a little bitterness in the air. Not that I'm saying you sound bitter TATATA Wink

Not bitter, just calling a spade a spade.

In the past I've just used whatever came into my head as I was writing (ie Fish Daddy), figuring I could go back and change them later. But often didn't, and ended up with some screwy names (ie Fish Daddy).
So now I have a list of names I add to whenever I come up on something I like. Latest entry: Wayne Barbum

Then again, as my books are satire, many of the names are close to those of literary figures. (ie George and Lenny, the Governor, Lydia, Josephine) Then there's Charlie Spider. For legal reasons I dare not say more about that one. Wink

Armistead Maupin did some interesting things with names in the Tales of the City books.

For the next name I need, I will be using such things as decorating catalogues, paint swatches, and designer labels. I'm not telling you why, but trust me, it's perfect.
