Gods damn my love for evil! Twisted Evil

I have a bad guy, and i like him. Everyone seems to hate him, whch is the point of having him, but i like him. He's much more interesting than my hero. he's all witty and sarcastic and powerful and just... cool.

My hero deserves to kill this bad guy, because he is in fact, so evil. The hero has gone through major shit to get to the point where Melak, the bad guy, no longer throws henchemn and such at him and now they're having it out... but i cant bring myself to kill the pointy eared bastard. I reckon the big mistake was making him so hateable to the readers but so likeable to me. I know why he's evil in great detail and i suppose i could write it out but i hate having huge bits of narrative in my book. And since he's really evil and really old it would indeed be a HUGE bit of narrative.

So help me out, fellow board people... I am most definitely doomed without you!

I am probably the wrong person to tell you this because I am not one for killing off anyone except with diseases, old age or just plain stupidity but just do it. If he is that bad than I guess it is the good old American way to have him die. You know we go so love our death penalty here. Please remember though good and bad are completely relative to societal mores. Chris had a bunch of brain eating zombies in his last book but if a zombie was reading it they would be saying, ‘Hey, I liked those Zombies and there is nothing wrong with eating brains for dinner.’ If someone say Hitler were alive today he might like your “bad” guy.

Here is a video it inspire you.

Since you are from Ireland I have to tell you the video, if it hasn't been changed is about the Red Sox and 86 years of waiting for a World Series Win.

well you COULD kill him and then have him reincarnated as a cat or something so he could continue to narrate or w/e.... or something like that. That way he can still be there and you can still enjoy him, but the readers still get their vengeance. Well, it made sense to me.

Who sez you have to kill him off? We live in the age of trilogies and series - you could always keep him around for a second, or third, or fourth book....

*shrugs* Have the hero get lucky if you have to kill him for the story. Y'know, the trip on the stack of porno mags, falls on a cat who leaps and carves off the bad guy's face and larynx. Wink

Does the story still work without killing him? If so, you're off the hook. Let him live. If he has to die to make it work, kill the bastard and smile while you're doing it.

1. Have him die a death that is "all witty and sarcastic and powerful and just...cool."

2. You don't have to write it ALL out -- just enough to let the reader know that there's another dimension to the evil character, or show it at work in his responses to situations or some of the things he says or in his death aria (see "1." above), or...something.

Well, you could always pull a Sherlock Holmes, like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did, and push them both off Reichenbach Falls. Then only Holmes came bacK, though, so I guess it doesn't apply.

Ferrit - Hey, thanks for making me CRY! At a COMMERCIAL. I NEVER cry!

Except at commercials. And when dogs bite my bootylicious hiney.

who is to asy that the hero lives??? YOu could have the hero bite it.... or you could have both bite it, and the hero can go slowly, knowing he did good, but being bummed because he knows he's a goner?

Just because you are good, does not mean you are invincible... think of it as the supreme sacrifice... he gave his life so that others may live... or some sappy shit like that...

One in a while I really would like to see the bad guy walk away unscathed, while the hero lies naked in pool of his own blood... ok, maybe the naked part is a tad gratuitous, but what the hell...

I have a story coming out in an anthology of erotic horror where the only requirement from the editor was that the bad guys win. Might be right up your alley here. And there are naked people, too!

Aren't you falling into the same trap highlight by pragmatic villian Scott Evil pointed out to his dad with:

Dr. Evil: As you know, every diabolical scheme I've hatched has been thwarted by Austin Powers. And why is that, ladies and gentlemen?
Scott: Because you never kill him when you get the chance, and you're a dope?

You have the chance! You have the power! DO IT! DO IT!

I haven't read all the posts in this thread (I will tomorrow, I'm too sleepy now) but in some books bad guys turn into good guys, like in Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer.
