I've noticed that style in a lot of books, and I always thought it was an intentional way to set the tempo of the story. Paragraphs that shift from character to character get shorter as their plotlines tie more closely together, and I liken it to a drummer speeding up the beat and the music getting faster. It makes for great suspense.
