Question for The Author Guy  Reply with quote

I'm writing a story about a retired Anthropology professor who suffers from dementia. The context is quite funny, but I'm concerned that laughing at a senile old man lacks compassion. Don Quixote was driven by intense passion and a vision of a better world. In his case, the reader is sympathetic but doesn't pity him. I think alot of people even envy Don Quixote.
Do you think that a main character who has delusions of grandeur because of mental illness makes for a weak story? What do you think about creating sympathetic characters?

Why is it that certain words like Monkey, Newt, or Poop, make people laugh? Do you think it's the words themselves or the items they refer to? If the SETI program were to broadcast the word 'Monkey' out into the deepest cosmos, do you think any alien nerds would pee themselves laughing? Do Bonobos squirt their banana daquiri out their nose when a buddy says, "Homo Sapien?"
