Writing using a pen name.  Reply with quote

When sending queries or manuscripts for a book you intend to publish using a fake name, at what point do you discuss that? Right from the beginning?

Had anyone here published using a fake name, and if so, what was your experience like?

I would buy a novel by Killer Tatertots, absolutely. Point me in the right direction. Smile But that's just me. I have had little luck trying to shill my books under my admittedly goofy pen name. For my next manuscript I will probably use my real name.

LOL, I won't be using this name, just using a fake, but real sounding one, to protect my identity and privacy.

If anonymity is an issue, than definitely go with a pen name. But if you're just a pretentious asshole like me and demand everybody call you by your cool internet name, you might come off as such. I have been told by more than a few people on this board and elsewhere that people find me much friendlier and like me better on Facebook where I use my real name than in forums where I use my SRD handle.

(And I have been working on not being an asshole. I'm not always successful, but I am trying Very Happy )

You gotta change names to protect the guilty or if the real names suck...

I haven't tried to write under a pen name yet, but I have heard that you are supposed to say right up front that you intend to publish under a pen name, but always submit under your real name. Besides, that's the name you'll need to cash the checks.

This. Your agent and publisher will need to know your real name as soon as you query. On the cover page for your manuscript, you'd put something like:

YOUR REAL NAME

Writing as YOUR PEN NAME
