Journalistic detachment  Reply with quote

After seeing this article:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/from_our_own_correspondent/8965711.stm

I thought I would ask you all what you think about journalists ever getting involved/interfering when in the field? Just in case things turn toward a discussion of war, I thought I should post this here.

Journalists may need to take a couple of field anthropology courses to grasp the concept of "participant observer"

She did nothing wrong. As long as her reportage was objective, she broke no barriers.

But as she pointed out, where does it end? She chose not to help the other woman who had also just had a baby.

What if the reporter is a war correspondent? Should they stop to help wounded people?

I have to say that there's no way I would be able to handle a job like this. My humanity would interfere with my ability to remain professional/objective, for sure.

She'd gone on to the medical clinic to interview the doctor, not specifically about the child, and felt moved to get help for the infant. If the doctor had time for an interview, he certainly was free at that time to make a field call.

The second family wasn't in the dire straights that the first was. They were in a camp with nearby medical treatment available.

And yes, one must be human first, journalist second. War correspondents in the field have frequently helped the wounded, called in support, etc. That's what makes their reportage true first-hand account

I agree with Ginjg.

If that level of detachment is required only sociopaths could be journalists.
