shameless plea for...  Reply with quote

No, not for sex.

I got a terrific idea -- I think -- for a novel, about three years ago.

I had already written one novel (unpublished), and was mulling over some ideas for another when this idea beat down my door.

"No," I protested, "staring into its big, ugly, hairy face. "You are too hard, too long, too complicated, too...for me."

"Tough shit," it replied. "I'm not going anywhere. Which is fortunate for you because I'm simply too good to pass up. And you'll never get an idea this good again -- especially if you don't take advantage of me (so to speak)." Then it took up residence atop my computer monitor, and would not go away.

And so, I began writing.

And it was too hard for me, but I just can't let the idea go because I would never forgive myself if I did. And I really love it. So, I decided that I had to become a better writer as I go.

It's not Tolstoy-length, but it is long, and there's no way to break it up -- trust me, I tried. I figure that I'm about halfway through the process, and I'm in need of a second wind.

So this is a shameless plea for someone, anyone, to say, "You can do it, Palmer!"

Worst case scenario: I will settle for sex -- at least until the ugly beast of an idea climbs back on to my computer monitor and starts exposing itself.

Or should I just fuck off? Smile

(Of course, I will finish it, with or without encouragement, but the latter scenario strikes me as far more pleasant.)

I saw take a few minutes, go look at some porn, relieve yourself of certain 'stressors' and go back to it after an hour of recovery.

BTW, I think you can do it. You're too stubborn to just let it sit there Razz

My theory on ideas ...  Reply with quote

Ideas can only stay in the brain so long, and then they have to spill out onto the page. So even if you wanted to stop now, ultimately, it's out of your control. But it's totally OK to take a break. I took 1.5 year break in my last novel, and the second half is WAY better than the first.

You CAN and WILL do it. Go you!

I mean, it was either say that or get on with the sex part, and then we'd have to apply for partner benefits, and God only knows what country we'd have to live in.

Do you prefer "You can do it" or "Just Do It?"

Apply whichever, I just want to know your preference.

For Pete's sake, palmer! Go have some sex and then finish that novel! It's not like boxing. You're allowed to have sex before you write. It might even improve your performance. Smile

You can do it.

Now do it.

Thanks for the excouragement. It was fun to see it on the screen. I'm writing happily. I think I had to reconcile myself to just how long thsi was goinbg to take and get a second wind. I have a handheld that I use on the public transit -- lots of otherwise wasted time to take advantage of -- plus time at home.

Yes, K, I am to stubborn not to.

Thanks for the offer SS, but I just met this great sheep...

Thanks for the PM, PM'er.

Thanks everyone.

Strangely enough, yes.

Well, the part about just doing it. I didn't have sex during the writing of my first one. I was at the end of eleven years of celibacy. But it's working for me now. Smile
