Analysis says war could cost $1 trillion

Budget office sees effect on taxpayers for decade

By Bryan Bender, Globe Staff | August 1, 2007

Lawmakers expressed concern that the White House is not adequately preparing the country for the financial burden.[...]

But McGovern said he is worried about the long-term financial impact of the war, adding that his primary concern is that the United States is borrowing money to pay for it. Some leading economists have predicted that, depending on how long troops remain in Iraq, the endeavor could reach several trillion dollars as a result of more "hidden" costs -- including recruiting expenses to replenish the ranks and the lifelong benefits the government pays to veterans.

"It is being paid for on the national credit card," McGovern said. "It is being put on their backs of our kids and grandkids. That is indefensible."

McGovern said he is considering proposing that a "war tax" be levied on all Americans to cover the ballooning expenses.

"We should find a way to pay for it so that when this war is over we are not bankrupt," he said.

And you know what, Bush could not care less. When he was asked about how history will judge him, he said it didn't matter to him at all because he would be dead. Too bad we cannot speed that along. Evil or Very Mad

Additionally, a Democratic president, if elected, will take all the heat for the substantial tax increases, rampant inflation, and probable recession that is bound to come.

You won't be bankrupt when the war is over but you will think you are.

He's already morally bankrupt, so what does he have to lose?

Hell, Bush and Cheney will leave the White House extremely wealthy, thanks to their war.

I think my state may be bankrupt.... I'm not kidding... quite a few members of the speedskating team work for our state... they haven't been paid for over nine days...they were supposed to get paid yesterday... nada.
I went to the friend of the court asking what's the deal about thousands in uninsured medical expenses that the soon to be ex is court ordered to pay half of to talk to the enforcement officer as they're piling up and it's been nine months.... they had to lay off those people, she was telling me they didn't even have time to look at medical they could barely enforce child support. Shocked
It's pretty freaky.
