So on "Morning Edition" this morning, there was a report about a recent Congressional hearing regarding personal taxes. There is apparently an idea before the committee to eliminate ALL personal income and employment tax. Instead, we would just have an across the board sales tax of 23% Further, we would also stop taxing our exported goods and start taxing imported ones (the idea here being that it would become MORE costly for US companies to outsource, so they'd stop doing it , thus saving more jobs here).
Workers would get to keep almost ALL of their wages, a figure that would add about 20% to your take-home pay each check, since we would now al be taxed on what we consume, not what we make.
The question came up, what about the poor? The solution offered is that a family of four would receive the first $20,000.00 of goods EACH YEAR for free.
Is it just me, or does this seem like a win-win situation (at least on paper)? Out of curiosity, how many of you would like to see such a change implemented?

I'd like more details, that's where the devil is.
This is just too much sunshine and flowers, there's a
butt plug and ball gag in there somewhere.
And I don't mean in a good way either.

Hmmm...23 percent on everything? Like would an apple would cost me more than a buck?

It does make sense though...you only pay taxes on what you can 'afford'. A $6,000 HD TV with 23 percent is a lot, but low income families shouldn't be buying those so the people with the money carries the load.

I'm for it...taxes shouldn't be so damn confusing and you shouldn't be taxed to death. In Alabama they tax everything including food. I'm pro-flat tax.

Although it will cause the unemployment of about a billion income tax careers. Would we still have to 'file' taxes or would it all come out in the wash? Could I write my smokes off on my taxes???? Wink

A flat tax will only work if it excludes food and "basic" clothing.

Food in most states isn't taxed, but clothing is. that tax is a hardship on low income families and should be eliminated. I don't know if they still have it, but when I lived in MA clothing under $300.00 was untaxed. Families could afford to buy good coats and sturdy boots every winter for growing kids.

As for taxing all imports? Well, if it's made off shore by an american company, it isn't considered as an import now. No way the corporations are going to give that up.

So they stop holding 20% of your pay so you can pay 23%? Plus state sales tax? the states aren't going to let the fed take over their revenue and dole it out. So we're talking 31.5% in CA.

And what about services? In some states they're untaxed and others they are.

I have a feeling we'd be better off eliminating the alternative minimum tax, making health care fully deductible, raising the income cutoff ceilings on required Social security and medicare contributions, increasing the child tax credit to something closer to actual cost and making the first $20000 for each adult in the household exempt.

It will never, never happen. Not that it's a bad idea, but it will never happen.
