Heard on "Morning Edition" (sorry I don't know how to do links, but go to the NPR website and I'm sure you can find this):

The senate has rejected a motion that would allow US troops to spend as much time home in the states after deployment as they have spent in Iraq.

So, if you go to Iraq 2 or 3 or 4 times, your country thanks you, but don't plan on getting 15 months at home to offset the 15 you just spent in the quagmire, that might "limit the war". Which some supporters of the bill said is just the point.

My brother has been three times in 4 1/2 years, most recently, now. The longest he got to be home was about 10 months. And it's not like they're on leave when they're home, they're still drilling and training and going into the field. They are also repeated denying R&R leave. Well, actually the brass is saying "Oh, you'll get R&R on _________, and then __________ comes around and it gets pushed further and further back until it doesn't happen at all.

On a related note, my local paper has a section on Sundays where they ask "the people" their opinion on a particular topic. This past week's was about the re-institution of the draft and they asked 5 people under the age of 22 what they thought about that. One young scholar made the comment that "the government doesn't have the power to do that" and another observed that "they shouldn't do that because the people over there now, want to be there", that will come as news to my brother and it will be an unwelcome suprise to the kid who obviously never studied American history that the gov't sure as fuck CAN do that. Just to be fair, the other three responses, while not as memorable, were also equally asinine.

Speaking of Fucktards, they did take the time to vote on a stupid initiative to condemn MoveOn.org for the Petraeus ad. This from the Senate who didn't say squat about the "Swift Boat" ad.

Re-instituting the draft is a horror show in the making.

I would strongly encourage anyone of draft age, if it is ever re-instituted, to run to Canada, or even go to jail.

This country's track record of politicians using its youth as "cannon fodder" all over the world sickens me.

Since we are well on the way to a paid mercenary army anyway, let's just continue to pay those brave men who really want to go to "war," and be done with it.
