FREEEEEEEEDOM!  Reply with quote

For anyone who watched Braveheart (that historically inaccurate movie) and cheered on the Scots when they fought to win freedom from England, here is the updated version of the fight. Next year, there will be a referendum in Scotland for independence from the UK. Some of you might think that the Scots would certainly go for it, but it's not that simple. It's actually very unlikely to go through. If the Tories (conservatives) gain control of Westminster in the next election, then the Scots MIGHT vote for independence, because they can't forget the nightmare that was Margaret Thatcher. The thing is, the Scots don't seem to be a very united people to me, except in their dislike of the English. Hell, they still have that Protestant vs. Catholic bullshit going on here. I think Westminster counts on that, as much as they count on the income from Scottish whisky and oil, which is in the billions.

I would be happy enough if the RAF would stop their low flights over our house and scaring the shit out of me.

You guys have oil?

You have no idea how glad you are that George Bush didn't know that. Otherwise he would have tried to liberate you and Edinburgh and Glasgow would be smoldering ruins, er, I mean, monuments to freedom.

Carry on! We love your tape.

Ahhh, I'm fairly certain that Dubya and his pals already have a substantial investment in the North Sea oil industry. From what I hear, there are a lot of American guys with Texas accents in Aberdeen. Wink

And your famous symphonic music by Germans (Mendelssohn, Bruch).

I've heard there have been unconfirmed incidents of haggisboarding, as well. I believe that is a direct contradiction of the Geneva Convention, as well as Robert (the Bruce's) Rules Of Order.

It was, until the Great Umlaut Glut of 1918. It is now known as SöderslänjämützNördlingen-on-Värm.

Whole civilizations have developed and vanished in the time it takes to say that name.

If I tried to pronounce every fake foreign word I made up, I'd never get past the morning coffee portion of my day... I thought this one had a nice flow to it, though. Laughing

The "on-Varm" part was a nice touch.

I'm pretty sure, if not entirely sure, SöderslänjämützNördlingen-on-Värm's is an extremely elaborate coffee table at Ikea.

I think the "on-Värm" part in Ikea's catalog means "without all neccessary parts, and requiring beer"

Haggisboarding? Laughing I thought that was an ancient gaelic ritual. Who knew it could be used as a method of torture?

Seriously, though, I've just finished reading a Time article by one not-so-brilliant Mr. Michael Elliott entitled: Three Things Obama Could Learn from Thatcher. I can tell you that if Obama follows any of Margaret Thatcher's policies and methods, the US is going down the shitter for sure. She basically sold off just about every industry that Britain had going for it. The mines, the shipbuilders, the steelworks, etc. Aside from causing huge riots, the loss of jobs sank so many areas of Britain into widespread poverty. It's been 25 years and these places have never recovered. If any of you ever want to explore the UK, be prepared to see a lot of ghost towns. (Unless you're on one of those bus tours, where they will try and bypass these places.) When I first came here, I asked my hubby what was up with this or that town? No jobs, no jobs, no jobs, he says. It's depressing. Scotland and Wales seem to have got the worst of it. Tourism can't replace the industry that was lost.

And on that happy note, I will leave you to your discussion of Swedish words. Wink
