tying together subplots  Reply with quote

If you have two subplots, more or less alternating for a substantial stretch, and there is no possibility of any direct interaction between them or having any shared characters, are there any techniques for making it feel more like they nontheless share the same book?

I think you can make it work a couple of different ways-

1- A character who is integral to one plot can make incidental appearances in the other story line

2- Similar themes - or different ways of approaching the same question/issue
(an example I can think of is DFW's Infinite jest- if you think of Mario Incandenza and PGOAT re: deformity, ideals of beauty, their different roles in filmmaking, or Hal Incandenza's drug addiction vs. the hero's..)

3- all paths meet at the end
