Follow Hwy 48 to 76,

one sheepshank right at blue water tanks

just beyond open cemetery gates. Take care

not to confuse turns. Itís hard to back out

without upsetting Mrs. Amesí grave.

Iíll take out the so-warm blackberry pie,

its crust brown-gold with sugar,

use the Homer Laughlin China

and shine the silver.

Your foot must tap-squeeze the brake

to take Flying Rock Curve.

Make four lefts and fade right

to Timbercreek, but there is no sign

so note-- itís just past Tanglewood.

Watch for white tailed deer and Old Man Ames

who hunts alone these days along back roads

for soda cans lying beneath cedar and boxwood.

Coffee--

donít forget coffee in Moss Rose cups,

or, if you like, sun tea in tall slender glasses.

The porch swing croons a waiting song

I will hum when you arrive.

Once you find the brown house with no grass out front,

a listing green mailbox across the road,

a sun tea jar on the porch and dogs barking,

youíre there.

Iíll serve the pie, pour the drinks

and hear about your trip between bites.

Iíll touch your hand when I serve you

and youíll smile and ask for more.

If you fall in the lake, you went too far

and youíll know youíre lost if you donít get any pie.
