how to be a great writer (NC17)  Reply with quote

Advice from Bukowski

Quote:
how to be a great writer

youíve got to fuck a great many women
beautiful women
and write a few decent love poems.

and donít worry about age
and/or freshly-arrived talents.

just drink more beer
more and more beer

and attend the racetrack at least once a
week

and win
if possible.

learning to win is hard-
any slob can be a loser.

and donít forget your Brahms
and your Bach and your
beer.

donít overexercise.

sleep until noon.

avoid credit cards
or paying for anything on
time.

remember that there isnít a piece of ass
in the world worth over $50
(in 1977).

and if you have the ability to love
love yourself first
but always be aware of the possibility of
total defeat
whether the reason for that defeat
seems right or wrong-

an early taste of death is not necessarily
a bad thing.

stay out of churches and bars and museums,
and like the spider be
patient-
time is everybodyís cross,
plus
exile
defeat
treachery

all that dross.

stay with the beer.

beer is continuous blood.

a continuous lover.

get a large typewriter
and as the footsteps go up and down
outside your window

hit that thing
hit it hard

make it a heavyweight fight

make it the bull when he first charges in

and remember the old dogs
who fought well:
Hemingway, Celine, Dostoevsky, Hamsun.

if you think that they didnít go crazy
in tiny rooms
just like youíre doing now

without women
without food
without hope

then youíre not ready.

dink more beer.
thereís time.
and it thereís not
thatís all right
too.

So let me get this straight. If I am to pursue a career in this genre I have to have many women lovers? Hmmm...I'll check with my husband on that and get back to ya'll.

If Sylvia Plath is any indication--it looks like we can probably get by with being tragically attracted to men who are really bad for us. Smile

I guess being happily married is contraindicative to fame . . .

Y,

I donít think that was his point. My take on what he was saying is that you have to be serious about your writing, write passionately, and be a little crazy. As far as I know you have the first two down but I am not sure about the crazy thing because I donít know you very well.

Ta,

Y definitely has crazy down. Itís the beer guzzling she needs to work on. That was the point, right, FL? You need to drink more beer to be a writer.

But beer is gross. It leaves this weird chewy feeling in your mouth. I'll drink Guiness, but only if it's ice cold. So, how bout I substitute the beer with tequila?

I am going to give up now, thanks Ja you bastard.

Oh I think hanging out with me is kind of like drinking beer. I know people often get hangovers after hanging out with me. So I think you all have fulfilled your Bukowski beer quotient. Iíll drink for the rest of you. Hell, Iíll drink for the whole board. I will fill your Bukowski beer quotient single handed and when I die from kidney failure I will die as proud as a man dying in battle. So you guyís write Iíll drink beer. Just for you.

Steve shudders, grabs Jeff, and goes off in search of proper-temp Guiness.

Don't give up FL! I don't drink that much anymore either! Your writing is inspiring! Please don't give up!!

Okay sgt...I've heard that Guiness is supposed to be room temperature, but you know what? I don't do most things conventionally, so why should I start now?

Oh, no reason . . . but that doesn't mean I shouldn't shudder at the thought of (brr) ice-cold Guiness. It's like . . . like . . . overcooked lobster.

overcooked lobster? So you've had my mom's cooking?

My husband, being the little world traveler the Navy has made him often lectures me on the 'proper' drinking temperature of various bevergages around the world. Well, whoop-a-dee-do. Like I give a crap who drinks what at what kind of temperature? I drink what I like however I like it. pfffffttttttttt In my opinion, beer is gross no matter what temperature it is served at.
