I have been reading student essays. Despite going over these points seemingly ad nauseum, they still use:

your . . . when they mean you`re

1980`s (possesive) when they mean 1980s (plural)

hopelessly misuse their - there - they`re

Common, kids, pay attention!

Okay, rant over. Carry on.

Lisa M, that has always irritated me too. Every teacher I've had has addressed it in some way, even at the university level. By the time you leave middle school, that should be firmly engraved in your brain. Honestly, it's not like it's physics.

Actually hands down my favorite English teacher of all time, and class is out and I;m still saying it so I'm not sucking up.

I still have it somewhere. Bless her little heart.

That's adorable!

I'm actually extremely anal when it comes to the correct forms of "your", "you're", and the "there"s. I am an assistant to one of the English teachers at my school and she makes me grade the essays because she hates the improper grammar so much. What she doesn't realize is it drives me even more crazy! I'm totally obsessive about grammar and comma placement. It's ridiculous. I suppose it will serve me well in college, though. I hope.

This kind of thing bugs me:

"From 1990-1992 she was married to X"
That little mark between "1990" and "1990" is not the word "to"!!!!! If the goal is to reduce the number of words, just write
    "During 1990-1992 ..."
AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHH!

don't go into hulk mode now Laughing

one thing I don't understand is why a lot of people are too lazy to use spell check. I go to a lot of different forums, and a lot of things I see in posts are "oh thts so kewl!" and whatnot. I just want to rip my hair out and shout "YOU HAVE A FRICKEN SPELL CHECK ON YOUR COMPUTER, USE IT!!!"

I mean, everyone misspells, yeah. But wouldn't you rather have something spelled right then wrong?
